The Lowdown on Lanyards

The lanyard is an amazing marketing tool.  It offers the flexibility of function as well as great advertising and branding opportunities.  Lanyards are the popular choice with almost everybody using one at some point.  You’re likely to see them used at conferences, festivals, hospitals, schools, government agencies, businesses and sporting venues, just to name a few.  If you’re looking for a cost effective and impactful way to advertise your business or event, then look no further than the lanyard.  AAC presents, “The Lowdown on Lanyards”.

the benefits of using a lanyard

Why should you choose a lanyard?  Well, there are many valuable benefits to using lanyards as part of your ID solution.  Here, we cover a few of the key ones:

Lanyards are cost effective:

A quality lanyard will help you get more out of your marketing spend.  Compared to other forms of advertising, the lanyard is budget friendly and often prices are based on quantity so you can take advantage of discounts when ordering for your monthly or annual needs.  Additional options on length, width, printing and which accessories to choose from put you in control of costs and make lanyards one of the most cost effective forms of advertising mediums you can use.

Lanyards are functional:

The functionality of lanyards mean they can be used for many different types of events and applications.  Paired with ID cards, they can be used for identification, designate roles (E.g. Security, Staff, etc.), access management, or as a branded promotional gift.  Furthermore, the practical nature of lanyards means your customers are likely to use them well beyond the initial event offering.  This can include connecting their gym access card, holding house or car keys, or work ID card, doing double duty as your brand ambassador well beyond its initial use.

Lanyards are fully customisable with great branding opportunities:

With a large surface area for your logo, graphics and messaging, a branded custom lanyard is highly visible when worn.  This gives you the opportunity to create a unique and eye-catching advertisement that creates brand presence at your event and communicates your brand using what is essentially, a walking billboard for your business.

what to consider when choosing a lanyard

When you order a lanyard, there are a few things to consider – custom vs printed, printing options and which accessories to choose.

Custom vs Plain:

The number one concern at all events, festivals, conferences, and venues is of course security.  If you choose to use a plain lanyard, beware that it can easily be copied and /or easily sourced from somewhere else.  Utilising a custom lanyard can minimise this concern, as the lanyard will contain a logo and content such as a message, and other unique identifiers to your event such as the date.

As discussed above, a custom lanyard really is the branding icon while a plain lanyards is, well, just plain!  Use the lanyard as a blank canvas and promote your business.  This also provides a more professional and polished appearance.

Printing Options:

The printing option you choose will depend on your budget needs.  There are two available printing options to choose from when customising your lanyards – screen-printing or full colour sublimation.

Screen-printing involves adding a layer of ink to the surface of the lanyard through a process using mesh screens and pressure.  A budget-friendly option, screen-printing is a great choice that offers excellent branding capabilities.

Full colour sublimation is a premium option using heat to infuse the ink directly into the fibres of the lanyard.  The result is a softer feeling lanyard with vibrant colours and photo-realistic imagery.

Accessories:

Custom lanyards also give you the ability to change the attachment as per your requirements.  There are literally thousands of combinations of colour, lanyard material, lanyard attachments and ID accessories that can be incorporated including ID wallets, ID cards, mobile phone holder attachments and much more.  A custom lanyard will be 100% unique to your organisation and your next event.

helpful hints when ordering lanyards

  • Be mindful of the optimal area for placement of your logo and other messaging.  For example, the area behind the neck will often be covered.  Our graphics team can help you place your logo and message in the correct location for maximum impact.
  • Differing sizes provide you with many options.  Consider different lengths to suit use, as well as a larger width  to get the most out of the branding capabilities.  Before you decide on what length, think about how the lanyard will sit around the neck, how it will be used (E.g. holding ID cars that will be scanned for access control, etc.) and the safety of its wearer (E.g. operating machinery).
  • There’s a lanyard for every budget. Lanyards are typically priced based on quantity so consider ordering for your future needs in one go.  As mentioned above, you can also fit the lanyards within your budget by considering what accessories you add.
  • Ensure your lanyard design is consistent with your branding guidelines and existing marketing activities. Keep colours and fonts used consistent; ensure you provide a high res image so your logo is clear and recognisable.  Since many wearers will continue to use their lanyards long after the event make sure your lanyard is unique to your business to maximise brand reach.
  • To minimise your carbon footprint, consider using an eco-friendly option. From bamboo to recycled PET plastic, there’s an option that will suit your environmental needs. Read here for more info on our eco-friendly options.
  • Don’t forget to order your PVC ID cards and accessories at the same time you make your lanyard purchase. Get a 10% discount when you bundle lanyards with ID cards.  Call our customer service to learn more.
